Oxytocin: The Bonding Neuropeptide

What oxytocin is
Oxytocin is a 9-amino-acid neuropeptide synthesized in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary. It is both a hormone (uterine contraction, milk ejection) and a central neuromodulator of social behavior.
Mechanism & receptors
It acts on the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a G protein-coupled receptor present in the uterus, mammary gland, and numerous brain regions (amygdala, nucleus accumbens). In the brain it modulates circuits of social reward, attachment, and the stress response.
Research lines
Intranasal administration has been studied extensively in social cognition, trust, pair bonding, and in conditions such as autism spectrum disorder. Results are heterogeneous: there are signals of effect but also replication difficulties, and whether intranasal oxytocin reaches the brain remains under debate.
